This is probably close to what is going to happen with perhaps the twist that it will just be a setting some DWORD = 1 in the registry. June 16th, 00:00: A new update is pushed out essentially reverting the changes and allowing iexplore.exe to only be run manually.

June 15th, 12:00: A state of emergency is declared by the Biden administration due to the inability of people to reach government websites and diplomatic channels are opened to Microsoft. Any attempt to run it will take you to Edge and the options in Edge to allow iexplore.exe to run will be removed.

June 15th, 00:00: iexplore.exe will no longer launch. What's the official "spicy" take on this so I can set a few folks straight on what this retirement really entails. Some of our IT guys are interpreting this by thinking that IE 11 (and all of it's files, dlls etc) are actually being completely purged from the Win 10 install where I actually I think it's more like the guts of IE 11 is still very much there - simply not launchable by the end user. I am getting some confusing commentary - even from some of our internal IT guys on what actually happens when MS effectively "disables" the ability to launch IE after a specific set of patches/group policy is applied:Īfter this date, the IE11 desktop application will be disabled through a Windows 10 cumulative monthly update and will redirect to Microsoft Edge if a user tries to access it."
